About Heather Neville - Labour Doula & Childbirth Educator

I am a passionate believer in birth as a normal, empowering process that can have lifelong impacts on confidence, self-esteem and trust in oneÕs own body. I support a womanÕs right to choose what is best for her and for her baby when she is respected and informed. I understand that every woman is an individual and that every birth is different. I will always support a woman's choices, regardless of whether or not they are the ones I would make for myself.

I believe that prenatal education and good support can provide self-esteem, self-confidence and trust in oneÕs natural abilities and instincts throughout pregnancy and childbirth. These elements combined can lead to more empowering birth experiences in which birthing women make informed decisions, play an active role in their health care and are able to anticipate and experience their births with strength, joy and pride.

I also believe that prenatal education and doula support can encourage the partners of birthing women to embrace the role of active participant in the births of their children, respecting and admiring the woman in labour, while engaging with the process and providing comfort and support with confidence.

Birth is natural. Birth is normal. Birth can be empowering.

Service Details

I visit my clients in their home twice in the prenatal period. During these visits we will get to know each other a little better, building trust and rapport. I'll show you/discuss with you a variety of relaxation/pain management techniques (e.g. breathing techniques, hydrotherapy, hot/cold therapy, etc.), labour positions and acupressure points, and discuss your likes and dislikes so that we can build our toolkit for your labour. We can also discuss any fears or concerns you may have about labour, any health issues that may have arisen during your pregnancy or issues related to newborns and breastfeeding. I'll help you develop a birth plan and understand the choices that are available to you, so that you can make them in as informed a way as possible. Between visits I'll do research on your behalf and send you a variety of evidence-backed resources so that you can get a broad understanding of the things that matter to you. I will clarify medical terminology for you and help you to learn how to effectively communicate your wishes to your health care team.

When labour begins I will come to your home - I will not leave your side from that point until at least two hours after your baby is born, whether we travel to the hospital together or your baby is born at home. Regardless of the type of birth that you choose I will support your decisions and will help you to self-advocate throughout your labour so that your wishes are always respected. I will perform massage and acupressure as you desire to help you cope with contractions and I will encourage you with words, breath and soothing touch. I can remind you to try different labouring positions, as well as baths or showers and other pain management techniques. I will help to ensure that you stay in-control and focused on the positive. Once the baby is born I will help to make sure that breastfeeding is going well and that you are comfortable and secure before I depart.

After the birth I will visit you twice more in your home. If there are any resources that you require I will continue to do research on your behalf and make sure that you have useful and evidence-based information that is relevant to you.

I am always available to my clients by telephone 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. I am on-call for your labour from 38 weeks until your labour begins. During that time I will never be more than an hour away from your home. I always have a back-up doula who you will be able to call in the unlikely event that I am unable to attend your birth.
A preliminary interview carries no obligation.
